Feature Update July 2026

Our last major CloudCasa feature update was only two months ago, but we’ve kept up our rapid development pace this summer, and today we’re happy to announce another new update with several great new features!

Simplified selection when restoring VMs or PVCs

A new VMs/PVCs tab has been added to the “Select resources” step in the Define cluster restore wizard. This allows you to more quickly and easily select individual VMs or PVCs for restore, and mirrors the selection process used when defining backups. Previously you needed to use the Specific resources tab to select individual VMs or PVCs for restore.

CloudCasa DR improvements

CloudCasa will now, by default, attempt to stop workloads on the source cluster when performing failover/failback. VMs will be powered off and deployments scaled down on the source (active) side. A new Stop workloads before failover option has been added to the final page of the DR recovery job wizard to control this behavior. It defaults to enabled. Note that in the event the source cluster is unreachable (e.g. in an actual disaster scenario), CloudCasa will proceed with failover/failback even if this step fails.

Automatic VolumeSnapshotClass creation

CloudCasa will no longer create volume snapshot classes automatically for certain CSI drivers which it knows require additional parameters that it cannot supply (e.g. authentication information). Snapshots using auto-generated VolumeSnapshotClass resources for these drivers would not succeed. Instead, they would eventually time out, wasting time in the process. Now they will fail fast and surface the problem right away.

For these CSI drivers, you should manually create a VolumeSnapshotClass with the correct driver-specific parameters and associate it with the target StorageClass, then re-run the backup. The easiest way to associate the VolumeSnapshotClass with the appropriate StorageClass is to go to Edit cluster -> Advanced Options -> Configure volume snapshot classes.

Drivers for which volume snapshot classes will not be created automatically currently include: csi.hpe.com, csi.nutanix.com, rbd.csi.ceph.com, openshift-storage.cephfs.csi.ceph.com, and openshift-storage.rbd.csi.ceph.com.

Miscellaneous

  • CloudCasa will now show DR job activity messages indicating what workload-related actions are taking place, such as scaling down deployments, powering off VMs, etc.

  • CloudCasas DR job activity messages will now display the actual cluster name instead of generic terms like “source cluster” or “target cluster”.

  • CloudCasa will now automatically select live backups for PVCs using the Kubernetes CSI Driver for SMB (smb.csi.k8s.io), since it does not support snapshots.

Kubernetes agent updates

In this update, we’ve again made several changes to our Kubernetes agent to add features, improve performance, and fix bugs. Some new product features will not work with older versions of the agent. However, manual updates shouldn’t normally be necessary because of the automatic agent update feature. If you have automatic updates disabled for any of your agents, you should update them manually as soon as possible.

Notes

With some browsers, you may need to restart, hit Control-F5, and/or clear the cache to make sure you have the latest version of the CloudCasa web app when first logging in after the update. You can also try selectively removing cookies and site data for cloudcasa.io if you encounter any odd behavior.
