VM Backups

The VMs/Backups page shows all of your configured backup job definitions that include specifically selected VMs, and allows you to run them, edit them, delete them, or create new ones.

Note

Only backup jobs in which individual VMs have been selected are shown on this page. Backup jobs that include VMs by selecting entire clusters, namespaces, or labels are shown only on the Cluster Backups page.

The columns displayed in the table are: Cluster, Backup name, VMs, Policy, Last run time, and status of the last 3 runs. Each backup job name is labeled with its type, either snap (snapshot only) or copy (snapshot and copy to backup storage). The VMs column lists the VMs included in the backup, in the format namespace: VM name. Click on a VM to open the VM Dashboard page for that VM. If more than three VMs are included in a backup job, click + N more to display the rest of them. An (!) icon next to the cluster name indicates that the cluster is not currently active.

You can filter the list by backup name, VM name, and last run time. One or more action buttons may also be available for each backup job definition.

Possible actions are:

Remove

Delete the backup job.

Restore

Open the restore wizard to perform a restore from a backup created by this job.

Run now

Run the backup job immediately regardless of the schedules in the associated policy. This is only available if the cluster is active.

Edit

Edit the backup job.

Clicking on a backup job name in the table will take you to the job’s dashboard, which displays summary and activity information about the job.

Defining a VM backup

To define a new backup job, click the Define backup button in the upper right of the page. This will open the Define VM backup wizard. The wizard can also be opened with the Define backup action on the Overview of VMs page or on the VM Dashboard page. In that case, the cluster and the VM are already selected for you.

The Define VM backup wizard is the same as the Cluster Backup Wizard, except that it is set up for backing up VMs:

  • In the Selections step, the Standard selections and VMs/PVCs tabs are not shown. Instead, a table lists all VMs on the selected cluster, and you simply check the VMs you want to back up. You can filter the table by VM name and sort it by namespace or name. All resources associated with the selected VMs, including their PVCs, are automatically included in the backup.

  • The App hooks step is not shown.

The PV protection options, advanced options, and the Policy and Summary steps are the same as in the Cluster Backup Wizard.

Note

Backup jobs defined from the VMs tab are regular cluster backup jobs. They are also shown on the Cluster Backups page, and they can be managed from either place.
